Canadian Universities and Colleges

Canadian Universities and Colleges

A comprehensive directory of Canadian colleges and universities, since 1996.
Overview of Canadian Universities and Colleges
Canada has a strong reputation for the quality of its higher education institutions. Universities in Canada conduct world-class research in the sciences and engineering. The country is increasingly a destination for International students seeking post-secondary degrees. A Canadian university or college degree is generally considered equivalent to degrees from the United States and Commonwealth countries.
The Canadian system of higher education is province and territory based, with each provincial and territorial legislature having constitutional responsibility for its universities and colleges. Canada is made up of ten provinces and three territories. There is no national-level ministry or department of education. This system of responsibility dates back to 1867.
Canadian University Tuition and Funding
A result of Canada's provincial approach is that the majority of higher education funding comes from local governments with the remainder coming from the federal government and tuition and grants. This means that one notable difference between Canadian universities in different provinces is their level of funding. For instance Quebec universities receive the most funding and have the lowest tuitions while those located in Atlantic Canada have the least funding.
Canadian University and College Degrees and Recognition
Canada's higher education institutions have been classified into universities and colleges. Canadian universities grant degrees at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. Canadian colleges, which are also known as Canadian community colleges, provide diplomas. What is considered a university varies from province to province. In some provinces membership in the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) is required for an institution to be able to grant university-level degrees. In other provinces such membership does not necessarily grant university status.
Recognized Canadian colleges and universities are those that have been given authority to grant degrees, diplomas, and other credentials by an act of the provincial or territorial legislature or through a government-specified quality assurance process. Some Canadian institutions may be registered or licensed, which means that they have been given through a local legislature the right to operate as a commercial business for the purpose of offering training programs. Such registration or licensing is intended for consumer protection by ensuring that the private educator meets minimum requirements including financial.
About Canada
Canada's population is one of the most educated in the world -- its rates of completion of higher-education studies is among the highest. The country's 2006 census reported that six out of every 10 adults between 25 and 64 years old has finished some type of postsecondary education.
Canada is highly diverse in its cultural heritage. Its 2006 census showed more than 200 ethnic origins and 200 first languages among its citizens. Its official languages are English and French with the census showing 57 percent speaking English as their first language and almost 22 percent speaking French. Most of the country's citizens that use French as their first language live in the Quebec province, where close to 80 percent use French as their primary language.
By geography Canada ranks as the second largest country on the planet. However, due to its climate nearly 90 percent of the country is unsettled. Most of the country's more than 33 million citizens live in urban areas in the south, close to the US border. Canada is a major industrialized nation, being a member of the G7/8, the G20, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, and many other international bodies. The country's economic policy places a very strong linkage between a highly educated workforce and its prosperity.
