Unleashing a New Era of University-Industry Partnership - DTU signs an MoU with Samsung India Electronics
In a breakthrough step towards strengthening the academia-industry interface, Delhi Technological University (DTU), has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Samsung India Electronics Ltd (SIEL).

New Delhi, Delhi, May 6, 2011 /India PRwire/ -- In a breakthrough step towards strengthening the academia-industry interface, Delhi Technological University (DTU), has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Samsung India Electronics Ltd (SIEL). The MoU was exchanged between Prof. P.B. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, DTU and Dr. Jason D. Kwak, Managing Director, Samsung Software Engineering Lab-India in the presence of Chief Guest for the occasion, Mr. P.K. Tripathi, IAS, Chief Secretary, Govt. of NCT of Delhi today at the Delhi Secretariat.
Other dignitaries present on the occasion included Mr. Anand Prakash, IAS, Principal Secretary, Training & Technical Education, Govt of Delhi; Mr. Sanjay Rai, Vice President, SEL-India; Prof. Moin Uddin, Pro-Vice Chancellor, DTU and Dr. Daya Gupta, Head of Department, Computer Engineering, DTU, under whose department this collaboration has been done.
The MoU broadly covers four areas of collaboration -- Cooperation in Knowledge Sharing through In-house tutorials, workshops conducted by DTU for employees of SIEL, sponsored doctoral and post graduate programmes at DTU for employees of SIEL, Internship opportunities for the students of DTU in SIEL and Joint Research projects.
Calling the collaboration between DTU & SIEL a "partnership for excellence", Mr. Tripathi said, "We are moving from Information Society to Knowledge Society. If India has to forge ahead, we have to create knowledge hubs for partnership between academics and industry, which can unleash the power of innovations. This MoU is a stepping stone towards a long-term partnership between two premier organizations."
Under the MoU, Samsung will recruit up to five student interns from DTU for six weeks on a paid stipend, who will be exposed to live projects of SIEL. It may also conduct up to 10 lectures for DTU students by senior officers of the company to give them an industrial perspective. SIEL may further, explore opportunity for joint project with DTU in the areas of Software Engineering/ Software Development. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Sharma remarked, "This is a momentous occasion for DTU. By signing this MoU with one of most innovative companies, we are unleashing a new era of Industry-University partnership. This MoU will aid us in bridging the gap between graduating engineering and professional engineers as well as reduce the gap between lab level research and the research required by the industry in developing new technologies. The missing gaps in expertise at both the partners may be filled through this collaboration and it will be particular beneficial for the UG and PG students of DTU, who will get to earn while they learn."
DTU on the other hand, will impart in-house tutorials to the employees of SIEL on Data Structure, Object Oriented Programming, Software Engineering and Operating Systems. In addition, the University shall offer a customized M.Tech. programme for them on weekend basis, with a minimum intake of 20 as well as provide them up to 2 seats in PhD program. The University will also explore the opportunity to provide SIEL a higher status as a company in its recruitment process. "We have been recruiting students from DTU for past few years and we felt that we can go beyond and provide them a better understanding of industry practices. We are particularly keen to undertake joint research with DTU in the area of mobile computing and communication technologies, informed Dr. Kwak.
The MoU will be initially for a period of three years and can be further renewed mutually. "This collaboration is a golden opportunity for DTU students to garner industrial exposure and at the same time will enable employees of SIEL to update their knowledge & skills," added Dr. Gupta.
